Medina Azahara

Scott McLain. The exhibit Nur: Light in the Islamic Arts and Sciences which will take place until June 24th consists of magnificent window latticework from the 10th century, 1.77 metres tall in white marble worked on both sides with laced geometric motifs and shadows. Each shows a careful use of intense contrast between light and shadow which comes from the Arqueological Museum. Its style and carving are related to those worked upon between 980 and 990 AD for the quibla of the Almanzor expansion.

Medina Azahara in turn will have three pieces on display. A compound capital coming from the Hall of Abd al-Rhaman III with a great decorated trepan, one of two luxurious pieces of marble that decorated the entrance hollow to the hall containing the bathtub in the old Bath of the Rich Hall. Its ornamentation is exquisite and a characteristic califate oil lamp with a large hole.

In this showing we explore the usage and meaning of light in art and science of the Islamic world making clear that light is the unifying factor in Islamic civilizaations around the world.

With the participation of these cultural institutions in temporary exhibitions of this organization, Cordoba’s heritage and culture is spread joyously both nationally as well as internationally.
